At home euthanasia

What to expect

Euthanasia is an overdose of sedative medications designed to help your pet feel relaxed and then sleepy and then to pass peacefully. Our vets perform euthanasia in two parts. The first part involves a sedation cocktail given under the skin (subcutaneously). Within 10-15 minutes of this medication, your pet feels sleepy and gradually becomes deeply sedated. Once heavily sedated, and when you are ready, an IV is placed and an overdose of sedation medication is given through the IV. Your pet may pass while that medication is given slowly (over a few minutes) or shortly after.

If your pet is wary of new people an oral sedation medication can also be given prior to the first sedation medication.

After your pet has passed, if you have chosen cremation, our vet will tuck your loved one in a blanket and carry him or her to her vehicle. Please know there is no rush to this process. If the family or other pets need time to visit, we will accommodate that time.

If your pet is over 30 lbs, a stretcher will be used to move your loved one. Our vet will need one person’s assistance moving this stretcher.

All cremation services are provided through Fond Memories. If you choose to have your pet’s ashes returned to you, you may pick him or her up through your primary care veterinarian or chose to have the urn shipped to your home.

All paperwork and payment is taken care of prior to the appointment so that you can concentrate on being with your pet during their final moments. The veterinarian will confirm your aftercare wishes at home prior to starting the euthanasia process.

How to Prepare

  • Pick a spot where your pet is most comfortable. This can be in a sunny window, favorite bed, or anywhere your pet is comfortable. We do not advise being outside during the summer.  Keep in mind when choosing a comfy spot that during the sedation process, as your pet relaxes, he or she may urinate or defecate. Our vet will provide potty pads but please keep this in mind when choosing a location.
  • Decide who wants to be present. This could include facetiming a long-distance family member or making arrangements for young kids.
  • If your pet is still eating, consider preparing a special treat. Some family members will choose to give chocolate during the appointment as it is the only time dogs can safely have chocolate.” to “If your pet is still eating, consider preparing a special treat such as steak, pizza, or even chocolate. (Please note we do not recommend giving chocolate to healthy dogs).
  • Spend the day doing your pet’s favorite things- playing with favorite toys, basking in the sunshine.
